1998-2010: Founding and growth[edit]

Tencent was founded by Ma HuatengZhang Zhidong, Xu Chenye, Chen Yidan and Zeng Liqing in November 1998[28] as Tencent Inc.[29] Incorporated in the Cayman Islands,[30] initial funding was provided to it by venture capitalists.[3] In February 1999, Tencent's iconic messenger product OICQ released.[31] Shortly after, Tencent had its name changed to QQ; this was said to be due to a lawsuit threat from ICQ and its owner AOL.[28][32] The company remained unprofitable for the first three years.[28] South African media company Naspers purchased a 46.5% share of Tencent in 2001.[33][34] (As of 2014, it owns 34%.[35]) Tencent Holding Ltd was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 16 June 2004,[29] and it was added as a Hang Seng Index Constituent Stock in 2008.[36] The company originally derived income solely from advertising and premium users of QQ, who pay monthly fees to receive added extras.[28] But by 2005, charging for use of QQ mobile, its cellular value-added service, and licensing its iconic penguin character, which could be found on snack food[37] and clothing,[28] had also become income generators.[28] By 2008, Tencent was seeing profit growth from the sale of virtual goods.[38] While Tencent's services have included online gaming since 2004, around 2007–2008 it rapidly increased its offerings by licensing games.[39] While least two, CrossFire and Dungeon Fighter Online, were originally produced by South Korean game developers, Tencent now makes its own games.[39]

2011-2014: Early investments[edit]

On February 18, 2011, Tencent acquired a majority equity interest (92.78%)[40] in Riot Games, developer of League of Legends, for about USD 230 million. Tencent had already held 22.34% of the equity interest out of a previous investment in 2008. On the 16th December 2015, Riot Games sold its remaining equity to Tencent Holdings.[41][42] Tencent acquired a minority stake in Epic Games, developer of franchises like UnrealGears of War and Infinity Blade, in June 2012.[43]Tencent in 2013 increased its stake in Kingsoft Network Technology, a subsidiary of Kingsoft Corporation, to 18%. Tencent previously had a 15.68% stake in the company and raised the stake through a USD 46.98 million investment.[44] Tencent took part in Activision Blizzard splitting from Vivendi as a passive investor in 2013[45][46] and now owns less than 4.9% of the shares as of 2017.[47] On September 17, 2013, it was announced that Tencent had invested $448 million for a minority share in Chinese search engine Sogou.com, the subsidiary of Sohu, Inc.[48]

On January, 2015, Tencent launches WeBank (China), China's first online-only bank.[60] On January 30, 2015, Tencent announced that it had signed a USD 700 million deal with the National Basketball Association to stream American basketball games in China.[61] Later that year, Chinese automaker BYD became the chief corporate sponsor for Tencent's NBA broadcasts.[62] On February 27, 2015, Tencent announced that it had acquired a minority stake in Robot Entertainment, the developer of the Orcs Must Die! series.[63]At the same time, Brand Finance releases 2017 Global Top 500 Brands List, Tencent ranked 47th.[64] On April 29, 2015, Tencent acquired a minority stake in Glu Mobile, paying USD 126 million for 14.6 percent of the company.[65] On May 13, 2015, Tencent acquired a minority stake in mobile developer Pocket Gems, acquiring 20 percent of the company for the price of USD 60 million.[66] On June 21, 2016 Tencent announced a deal to acquire 84.3% of Supercell with USD 8.6 billion.[67] In July 2016, Tencent acquired a majority stake in China Music Corporation.[68] In 2016, Tencent, together with Foxconn and luxury-car dealer Harmony New Energy Autofounded Future Mobility, a car startup that aims to sell all-electric fully autonomous premium cars in 2020.[69] On March 28, 2017, Tesla, Inc. announced Tencent had purchased a 5% stake in Tesla for USD 1.78 billion.[70] The Wall Street Journal at the time called Tencent China's "most valuable company."[71] In a "direct challenge to Chinese search engine Baidu," in May 2017 Tencent entered news feed and search functions for its WeChat app, which the Financial Times reported was used by 770 million people at the time.[72]

In April 2017, Tencent unveiled its very own flagship gaming platform, WeGame which will host games, content, and services from all over the world and will provide gaming info, purchases, downloads, live streaming and community services, creating an open ecosystem for gamingWeGame is an upgraded version of TGP (Tencent Games Platform) that already has more than 200 million active users (compared to Steam's 125 million) and over 4.5 billion downloads, and is widely considered as a direct competitor to Steam. In May 2017, Tencent surpassed Wells Fargo to enter the world's top 10 most valuable companies.[78][79][80][81] Tencent has also entered an agreement with Wuhu City Council to build the world's first eSports town in the Chinese city of Wuhu, which comprises an eSports theme park, eSports university, cultural and creative park, animation industrial park, creative block, tech entrepreneurial community and Tencent Cloud's data center. The site will be used for the education and accommodation of future eSports players, as well as hosting national eSports events and serving as a hub for Tencent's game development. Aside from Wuhu, another eSports theme park has been planned in Chengdu.[82][83]

In June 2017, Tencent became the 8th most valuable company in BrandZ's Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands, signalling its growing influence globally as well as the rise of Chinese brands.[84][85][86] Alibaba overtook Tencent as Asia's most valuable company as its stocks surged after the company hosted its 2017 Investor's day.[87] The company has also developed its own voice assistant Xiaowei, and is in the midst of discussion to acquire Rovio Entertainment, the developer of Angry Birds.[88][89] At the same period, Tencent introduced its mini-programs feature that allows smartphone users to access mobile apps across the globe on WeChat without downloading them.[90]

In July 2017, Tencent bought a 9% share in Frontier Developments, the creator of the Elite: Dangerous and Planet Coasterfranchises; as well as developer for Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 & 3.[91] In September 2017, Tencent invested US$90 million in German aviation start-up Lilium Aviation, which specializes in developing and building high speed flying vehicles and electric jets.[92]

It will be working with San Francisco-based digital publisher Tapas Media, a partnership that will see English-language releases of a number of popular online Chinese titles.[97] It also enters a partnership with Alibaba Group on music-streaming rights sharing, the deal aims to protect licensed streaming services offering copyrighted content of the music industry, encouraging more high-quality and original music, as well as developing China’s fast-growing streaming market. Alibaba will gain the rights to stream music from international labels, which already have exclusive deals with Tencent, in return for offering reciprocal rights to its catalogue of Chinese and Japanese music.[98][99] Tencent plans to increase its advertising revenues through artificial intelligence and branded virtual costumes in video games.[100] It is also collaborating with L'Oréal, the world's largest cosmetics company, to explore digital marketing under the Joint Business Partnership (JBP) agreement and unleash new marketing innovations.[101]

Tencent has announced a partnership with Nintendo to publish its widely popular game Honor of Kings (King of Glory) into Nintendo Switch, causing Nintendo's stock to hit a 9-year-high, as well as JD.com to create and sell a line of merchandise (from clothing to accessories to other products), based on Tencent's games and intellectual properties.[102][103][104] It will also be working with China International Capital Corporation (CICC) in financial services, capitalizing on each other’s strength, while acquiring a 5% equity stake in the investment banking firm. The announcement of the deal propelled CICC's shares by as much as 16 percent.[105] Tencent Pictures unveiled that it intends to expand cooperation with overseas film and TV companies on new productions, as well as making more long-term investment in the movie and TV industry. Tencent has also signed an agreement with Helsinki and World Tourism Cities Federation to provide intelligent tourism services to Chinese tourists, with Helsinki serving as an intelligent tourism model for China's outbound tourism.[106][107]

In November 2017, Tencent revealed that it had purchased a 12% stake in Snap Inc in the open market, with plans to help establish Snapchat as a gaming platform.[108][109][108][110] The company also owns 44% stake in Sogou, a search engine company which started trading in New York on November 9, 2017. Tencent remained the largest video game publisher in the world by revenue, and had a market capitalization of around $475 billion. In the same month, Tencent announced the company's Q3 results that exceeded optimistic expectations with skyrocketing sales, net income and gaming revenue, while Wechat reached 980 million monthly active users.[23] It will be earmarking billions of dollars to amass a catalogue of user-generated content, in competition with Youtube.[111] The company also broke records by becoming the first Asian company to cross US$500 billion valuation, and surpassing Facebook to enter the top 5 list of the world's biggest firms.[13][14][15][16][112][113][114][115]

On 22 November 2017, Tencent formally entered into a strategic cooperation with PUBG corporation and obtain exclusive rights to operate ''Playerunknown's Battlegrounds'' in China.[116] On 23 November, Tencent and Hong Kong railway Co.,Ltd fomally signed a cooperation agreement. The two parties cooperated on WeChat payment and WeChat Pay HK (WeChat Hong Kong Wallet) in mobile payment business of MTR.[117][118]

In December 2017, Tencent's music arm, Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) and Spotify agreed to swap 10% stake and invested in each other's music businesses, forming an alliance in the music industry in which Martin Lau (president of Tencent) described it as a "strategic collaboration".[119][120]

In January 2018, Tencent and The Lego Group, the world's largest toy company, are teaming up to jointly develop online games and potentially a social network aimed at children.[121] It also launched its first unmanned shop in Shanghai, joining the likes of other major e-commerce companies including Alibaba, Amazon and JD.com, receiving over 30,000 visitors in the first two days of its opening.[122] Tencent led a US$5.4 billion investment in Wanda Commercial, together with JD.comSunac and Suning Group, to acquire shares in the conglomerate. Wanda Commercial will be renamed as Wanda Commercial Management Group, with its new investors on the board, it represents one of the world’s largest single strategic investments between internet companies and brick-and-mortar commercial giants.[123] Tencent bought a 5% to 10% minority stake in Skydance Media.[124]

On January 23, 2018, Tencent and Carrefour reach strategic cooperation agreement in China. [125] Tencent said it is looking forward to working with Carrefour to further enrich the retail and service experience of its users and to strengthen Carrefour's services with Tencent's technological capabilities such as mobile payments, digital affiliate programs, customer acquisition and cloud services.[126] Between Carrefour and RT-Mart, Ali chose RT-Mart.   • Baidu Knows (百度知道) provides users with a query-based searchable community to share knowledge and experience. Through Baidu Knows, registered members of Baidu Knows can post specific questions for other members to respond and also answer questions of other members.
  • Baidu MP3 Search provides algorithm-generated links to songs and other multimedia files provided by Internet content providers. Baidu started with a popular music search feature called "MP3 Search" and its comprehensive lists of popular Chinese music, Baidu 500, based on download numbers. Baidu locates file formats such as MP3, WMA and SWF. The multimedia search feature is mainly used in searches for Chinese pop music. While such works are copyrighted under Chinese law, Baidu claims on its legal disclaimer that linking to these files does not break Chinese law. This has led other local search engines to follow the practice, including Google China(Hong Kong), which uses an intermediate company called Top100 to offer a similar MP3 Search service.
  • Baidu Image Search enables users to search millions of images on the Internet. Baidu Image Search offers features such as search by image size and by image file type. Image listings are organized by various categories, which are updated automatically through algorithms.
  • Baidu Video Search enables users to search for and access through hyperlinks of online video clips that are hosted on third parties’ Websites.
  • Baidu Space the social networking service of Baidu, allows registered users to create personalized homepages in a query-based searchable community.[54] Registered users can post their Web logs, or blogs, photo album and certain personal information on their homepages and establish their own communities of friends who are also registered users. By July 2009, it had reached 100 million registered users
  • Baidu Baike, is China's largest online encyclopedia by users and page views/web traffic; second largest encyclopedia by article count (after Hudong).
    • China Digital Village Encyclopedia (中国数字乡村大百科全书), in June 2009, Baidu announced it would compile the largest digital rural encyclopedia in China, according to China Securities Journal. It is expected to include 500,000 administrative villages in China, covering 80% of the total 600,000 villages in China. Baidu sees China's rural areas as great potential for electronic business (e-business), evidenced by the fact that revenue grew the fastest from agriculture, forestry, animals, and fishery in the company's keyword promotion project, a crucial source of Baidu's total revenue. In addition to Baidu Encyclopedia, the company scales up keyword promotion and takes advantage of other products, such as Baidu Zhidao and Baidu Youa, to provide consultation, brand ad exhibitions and online network marketing/sales platform support, marketing information for rural tourism and promoting local products.[56]
  • Baidu Search Ranking provides listings of search terms based on daily search queries entered on Baidu.com. The listings are organized by categories and allow users to locate search terms on topics of interest.
  • Baidu Web Directory enables users to browse and search through websites that have been organized into categories.
  • Baidu Government Information Search allows users to search various regulations, rules, notices, and other information announced by People's Republic of China government entities.
  • Baidu Postal Code Search enables users to search postal codes in hundreds of cities in China.

  • Baidu Tongji is Baidu's web analytics platform. It provides users with many reports about visitors to their website, such as a report on the source of visitors to their website, a user demographics report, reports on content viewed on site, and a heat map report.[58]

  • Baidu Desktop Search, a free, downloadable software, which enables users to search all files saved on their computer without launching a Web browser.

  • Chinese-language voice assistant search services for Chinese speakers visiting Japan was launched in 2008, with partner Japanese personal handy-phone system operator Willcom Inc.
  • Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific,[60] joint venture with Discovery Communications, focusing on science, technology, space, natural history, engineering, paleontology, archaeology, history, and culture.
  • Baidu Index (known as Baidu Zhishu) allows users to look up the search volume and trend for certain hot keywords and phrases. It can serve as a Baidu keyword research tool.[61]
  • Baidu Bookmarks (known as Baidu Soucang) is a social bookmarking service supported by Baidu.com
  • Baidu Browser is a web browser first released[62] as a beta in July 2011.[63] It has been noted that the user interface looks very similar to Google Chrome/Chromium.[64]

  • Baidu Library is an open online platform for users to share documents. All the documents in Baidu Library are uploaded by the users and Baidu does not edit or change the documents. Users can read and download lecture notes, exercises, sample exams, presentation slides, materials of various subjects, variety of documents templates, etc. However, it is not completely free. In order to download some documents, users should have enough Baidu points to cover the points asked by the uploaders. Users could gain Baidu points by making contribution to Baidu Library and other users, such as uploading documents, categorizing documents, evaluating documents, etc.[66]
  • Baidu Experience is a product of Baidu primarily focusing on supporting the users with practical problems. In other words, it helps the users to solve the "how to do" problem. It was launched in October 2010. In architecture, Baidu Experience has integrated and reformatted Baidu Encyclopedia and Baike Knows. The first difference between Baidu Experience and Baidu Knows is that the former concentrates on specific "how to do" problems while the later contains a wider range of problems. The second difference is that users could share their experience without being asked on Baidu Experience.[67]
  • Baidu around You is a searching and sharing platform aiming at supporting the users with making their consumption decisions. There are currently 7 main categories of information on Baidu around You, including food, shopping, recreation, hotels, fitness, beauty and traveling. In addition, Baidu around You provides the users with convenient services and local information, partially coming from the users and searchable by cities.[68]
